Gay Marriage Endorsement of the Day: Colin Powell jumped on the gay marriage bandwagon today with an endorsement during an interview with Wolf Blitzer:

I have no problem with it, and it was the Congress that imposed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” though it was certainly my position and my recommendation to get us out of an even worse outcome that could have occurred, as you’ll recall. But as I’ve thought about gay marriage, I know a lot of friends who are individually gay but are in partnerships with loved ones, and they are as stable a family as my family is, and they raise children. And so I don’t see any reason not to say that they should be able to get married.

North Carolina passes Amendment One, bans marriage equality:

Yesterday in North Carolina, voters passed Amendment One, a measure that bans recognition of same-sex relationships, including marriages and civil unions.

Roughly 61 percent of voters in North Carolina voted to pass the measure. North Carolina was previously the only southern state without a constitutional amendment banning marriage equality. Now, it is the 30th state in the country with such a law.

The North Carolina Democratic Party released a statement saying that Tuesday’s results were a “setback” but that Democrats in the state would continue to fight for “equal rights.”

“Tonight’s results are an unfortunate reminder that the fight for Civil Rights in our state is not yet over. Writing discrimination into our Constitution is wrong. The State Constitution exists to protect the rights of our citizens- not to take them away. Despite this setback, North Carolina Democrats will continue to fight for all of our citizens,” the statement said.

This is not over. There’s already a petition circulating to repeal Amendment One, and we will certainly hear from other gay rights organizations about how next to proceed. We will not let this go.

After a LONG five month hiatus, Macho City returns to the R&R to celebrate three years of dance floor debauchery. Shine up those chaps and dust off the poppers.

A brief histroy: Three years in, Macho City has gained momentum and a following due in large part to its devotion and celebration of all things Disco. Created by Mike Trombley and debuting in Philadelphia, Macho City (and Mike) soon relocated to Detroit where Scott Zacharias was added to the resident roster. The plan was to create a unique party that harked back to the heady days of legendary clubs like The Music Box and Paradise Garage while always looking toward the future. This formula proved successful and led to capacity crowds at Macho City’s headquarters, the R&R Saloon.

Mike and Scott, with their arsenal of dance (un)classics, began to attract a keen mix of disco heads, art students, club kids and leather daddies alike. Macho City provides a space where clubbers from all walks of life feel welcome. The party’s focus is on the music and its unifying power.

Over the past three years, Macho City has been fortunate enough to host some of the best international DJ talent. Past guests have included Beppe Loda (Italy/Typhoon), Azari & III (Toronto/Permanent Vacation), Ron Morelli (NYC/L.I.E.S.), Runaway (NYC/DFA), Legowelt (Netherlands/Clone, Creme), Nancy Fortune (France/Clone Records), Black Devil Disco Club (France/Rephlex Records), BMG (Ectomorph/IT), and Gay Marvine (Bath House Etiquette).

It’s been said many times that Detroit is one of the best incubators of DJ talent. The new, up and coming DJs of today often turn into big names tomorrow. Andrew Dall’olmo, aka DJ Dre, Deka and .KITE is setting the stage for his rise to notoriety.
     Dre grew up in metro Detroit. The diverse musical beat of the city was an early inspiration, particularly punk and electronic. The concept of music was something he desired to explore further, leading him to attend Interlochen’s Summer Arts Academy for five years. There, he was trained as a classical percussionist, finding an outlet for the rhythm that was developing in his core. After turning down an opportunity to audition for the Detroit Symphony, Dre turned his attention to performing in a variety of punk and hardcore bands in Detroit and Chicago.
     At age 15, Dre bought his first turntables and began to experiment with mixing his older brother’s Hip-Hop records. Intrigued by beat matching, Dre taught himself how to scratch by watching videos and online posts. That same year, his sister introduced him to DJ QBert’s album “Wave Twisters.” Dre’s perspective of DJing was changed forever.
      The art of turntablism became his new obsession. At 19, he won 2nd place in Guitar Center’s statewide turntable battle, beating hundreds of contestants.
      After living in Chicago, Dre moved back to the D, where he began making his mark as a DJ and producer. Residencies at Oslo (Fierce Hot Mess), The Works (Datswotsup) and Menjos (Private Joy) led to additional bookings. As Gin & Tronic (with cohort Paul Biundo) Dre takes a multi-genre approach to DJing. It is as .KITE, his ambient music persona, that may lead to worldwide acclaim. His first e.p. is out now, on Detroit Threads Recordings.

BREAKING: Dharun Ravi guilty of invasion of privacy, not bias intimidation:

Jurors have reached a verdict in the case of Dharun Ravi, the college student who filmed and broadcast his roommate Tyler Clementi in a sexual encounter with a man days before Clementi committed suicide.

Ravi is guilty of invasion of privacy, witness and evidence tampering and hindering apprehension. He was found not guilty on several counts of bias intimidation, a charge that would have meant Ravi’s actions were motivated by Clementi’s sexual orientation.

Ravi turned down a plea deal offered by Middlesex County prosecutors that would have allowed him to avoid jail time in exchange for undergoing counseling, doing 600 hours of community service and disposing of any information that could identify the man who appeared in the web video with Clementi.

Prosecutors also offered to help Ravi avoid deportation, though they said they could not guarantee it. Ravi, who had been studying on a visa at the New Jersey university, did not testify on his own behalf.

The CNN article above includes many details of the case. Ravi’s lawyers essentially said he was an innocent college student whose stupid prank went too far. He sent Clementi a text message apologizing, but it’s unclear whether Clementi got the text before jumping off a bridge to his death. Prosecutors said Ravi’s actions were acts of homophobia and intended to alienate and ridicule Clementi.

Horrible. But at least he didn’t get off completely…..

A California judge struck down a “key provision” of the Defense of Marriage Act tonight in a case involving a federal employee seeking benefits for her same-sex partner - the first ruling like this since the Obama administration announced it would no longer defend DOMA.

From ABC:

Karen Golinski, a lesbian woman married to her spouse under California law, brought the suit after she was unable to secure federal health benefits for her same-sex spouse.

U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey S. White said, “In this matter, the court finds that DOMA, as applied to Ms. Golinski, violates her right to equal protection of the law under the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution by, without substantial justification or rational basis, refusing to recognize her lawful marriage to prevent provision of health insurance coverage to her spouse.”

Woohoo! Every single news blurb like this represents a small but significant victory. We’re getting there.
